PFAS were detected in this water system's UCMR5 testing. Check which of them the filter you own is certified to reduce.

PFAS results for Manchester Twp Water Utility - Eastern (NJ1518005)

In plain words

Check the filter you own

This water system's highest reported PFBS result was 4.9 ppt (parts per trillion), at Treatment Facility 7 – Entry Point to Dist. System in UCMR5 sampling, 2023-01-09 to 2023-11-15. PFBS was detected at 1 of 3 sampling points and not detected at or above the 3 ppt reporting level at the other 2: Treatment Facility 2 – Entry Point to Dist. System; Pine Lake Park Treatment Facility 5 – Entry Point to Dist. System. Under EPA's April 2024 PFAS rule (89 FR 32532), PFBS is regulated only as part of a Hazard Index for mixtures of PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA (GenX) and PFBS. There is no standalone limit for PFBS. EPA published a proposal to remove the Hazard Index on May 20, 2026 (91 FR 29413). The proposal is not final, and the Hazard Index remains in effect. Status last checked in the Federal Register and the Code of Federal Regulations on October 23, 2026.

Each sampling point here is an entry point, a place where treated water enters the distribution pipes. Your utility may be able to tell you which entry points supply your area; some areas get water from more than one.

We track 1 filter so far. It is not certified for PFBS. No certified claim exists for PFHxA or PFPeA under NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 (2022 editions).

Check the filter you own

Certified claims for the filter we track come from its manufacturer's performance data sheet. If your filter is not listed, we do not have its certification data, and we do not guess.

PFAS compounds reported, and which filters we track are certified to reduce them

How to read this table: 'Highest level reported' is the single highest result in the dataset for that sampling point, not a yearly average. The legal limit is judged on a running yearly average at each sampling point. The certification pass level is the most a filter may leave in its treated water during the lab test; for PFOA and PFOS it applies to the two combined. The standard sets it, not the legal limit. These numbers come from different tests, so we do not subtract one from another or estimate what a filter would leave in your water.

In a "Not detected" note, the amount after "as published" is the same reporting level in the unit EPA's data uses.

Tested, not detected at or above the reporting level

These compounds were tested and not detected at or above the reporting level at any sampling point, so they have no row in the table above.

Certified claims, with their sources

The 1 filter we track is not certified for any of the PFAS compounds reported here.

PFAS compounds we do not score, and why

To 'score' a compound means to say which filters we track are certified to reduce it. When no certification claim exists, there is nothing to score, so we say so instead of guessing.

Read before acting on these numbers

Words on this page

PFAS
per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a large group of manufactured chemicals.
Compound names
short names of individual PFAS chemicals, such as PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) and PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonic acid).
ppt
parts per trillion, the unit used here for PFAS results and limits. 1,000 ppt equals 1 part per billion (ppb).
µg/L
micrograms per liter, the unit EPA's UCMR 5 data uses. In drinking water 1 µg/L equals 1,000 ppt, so 0.004 µg/L is 4 ppt.
Reporting level
the lowest amount EPA set for labs to report as a number in UCMR 5 testing (EPA calls it the minimum reporting level). A result below it is listed as not detected at or above the reporting level, which does not mean zero.
PWSID
Public Water System ID: the number EPA and the state use to identify a public water system.
UCMR 5
UCMR 5 (also written UCMR5): EPA's fifth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule, under which public water systems tested for PFAS and lithium starting in 2023. Each result on this page shows its sample dates.
NSF/ANSI 53
NSF/ANSI 53 (Drinking Water Treatment Units – Health Effects): a standard for home drinking water filters. Its 2022 edition sets PFAS reduction requirements for seven compounds: PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA, PFHpA, PFBS and PFDA.
NSF/ANSI 58
NSF/ANSI 58 (Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Treatment Systems): a standard for home reverse osmosis systems. Its 2022 edition sets PFAS reduction requirements for the same seven compounds.
Pass level
the most of a compound the standard allows in the filter's treated water during the lab test (for PFOA and PFOS, the two combined). The standard sets it, not the legal limit.
Certified
a certifier lists this model as meeting a standard's requirements for that compound. It describes a lab test, not a measurement of your water.
Certification claim
a reduction claim a standard offers, with its own lab test and pass level. Most are for one compound; for PFOA and PFOS, the claim is for the two combined. A filter model is certified only for the claims its certifier lists it for.
Sampling point / entry point
the place a sample was taken. An entry point is where treated water enters the distribution pipes, usually at a treatment plant. Neither is your tap.
Hazard Index
under EPA's April 2024 PFAS rule, the limit for mixtures of PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA (GenX) and PFBS, which counts these compounds together rather than one at a time. EPA published a proposal to remove it on May 20, 2026 (91 FR 29413); the proposal is not final.
Proposed rule
a change EPA has published for public comment but has not adopted. A proposed rule does not change any current limit.
Federal Register (FR)
the U.S. government's official daily publication of federal rules, proposed rules and notices. "89 FR 32532" means volume 89, starting at page 32532.
Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)
the official collection of federal rules in effect, arranged by subject. As part of each status check we read the PFAS limits in its continuously updated online version, the eCFR (40 CFR 141.61(c)(2)).
HFPO-DA (GenX)
hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid, a PFAS compound often called GenX.
Dataset
the published set of results a number comes from, named in the Dataset column.
Filters we track
the filters whose manufacturer performance data sheets we have entered. A filter not on our list may still be certified; we do not have its data.
Score
to say which filters we track are certified to reduce a compound.
Performance data sheet
the manufacturer's document listing a filter's certified claims, pass levels and rated life; it is our source for every certified claim.
Twp, Boro, W Dept, Div
abbreviations in water system names: Twp is township, Boro is borough, W Dept is water department, and Div is division.
